Tania Baban is a Los Angeles–based book artist and graphic designer whose multidisciplinary practice bridges book arts, painting, and mixed media. Born in Baghdad, she lived in Beirut and Geneva before moving to Los Angeles in 1981 to study at Otis College of Art & Design. She spent thirteen years as a graphic designer with the National Football League’s Creative Services Division. Her artist’s books are held in numerous private, museum, and library collections. She is the founder of Atelier Baban, a design studio, and co-founder of Conflux Press, an independent publishing house.

Since expanding into painting and mixed media in 2013, Baban has explored the dialogue between the book and the canvas, translating texts, imagery, and narratives into visual interpretations. Drawing on her background in book arts and graphic design, she investigates how meaning evolves across mediums, allowing the content of the book to inform and inspire the painted surface.

More recently, her work has drawn inspiration from Islamic and Middle Eastern art, particularly Arabic calligraphy, ornamental patterns, and geometric forms. Exploring calligraphy as both language and visual expression, she engages with its rhythm, gesture, and interplay of form and meaning. These influences offer a means of reconnecting with her cultural heritage while reinterpreting artistic traditions through a contemporary lens.

Through her work, Baban seeks to foster cross-cultural dialogue and share the richness of these traditions with wider audiences. Bringing together artistic disciplines, cultural memory, and contemporary concerns, she envisions a space where the book and canvas converse, inviting viewers to discover new perspectives and reflect on the enduring power of art to connect cultures, histories, and human experiences.
